Travel approximately 30 minutes to Mount Vernon, the home and estate of George Washington, one of the founding fathers of the United States and the nation’s first president.
On the 500-plus acres of the estate, explore the three-story mansion, extensive gardens and many original sites including a working blacksmith shop and the Pioneer Farm, a demonstration farm with an innovative 16-sided treading barn designed by Washington for threshing grain.
The mansion has been restored to how it would have looked when Washington died in 1799. Some of the most notable items in the mansion include the key to the Bastille, presented to Washington by the Marquis de Lafayette, and a swivel chair Washington used during his presidency.
Also on the grounds are Washington’s tomb, where George Washington and his family members are buried, a reconstructed slave cabin and a memorial to the slaves who worked at Mount Vernon. Your knowledgeable guide takes you through these sites while sharing the history of George Washington's home on the Potomac River.
After seeing the highlights of Mount Vernon and having lunch (own expense) at the historical Inn Restaurant or the food court, your tour continues to Old Town Alexandria. While riding a comfortable bus, see George Washington’s old haunts including Gadsby's Tavern, Ramsay House and Lee-Fendall House. You also will see the town’s major attractions including Old Presbyterian Meeting House, Christ Church, Spite House, Robert E Lee's House and the Torpedo Factory.
When your fascinating day exploring Mount Vernon and seeing Old Town Alexandria ends, your guide returns you to the original departure location.

The trip was amazing. Our driver was very helpful and very knowledgeable. We learned alot and had a wonderful afternoon.
Wonderful. So worth doing this tour...
Excellent tour well worth the price.
Paul, our driver, was exceptional and kept us informed about historical details during the drive.
Mt. Vernon is a beautiful estate, and I truly enjoyed the visit and tour.
I recommend that Viator inform passengers that they have to wait in a long line to tour inside GW's home. Tour information implied that we had a pre-ticketed small group tour of the estate. With only 3 hours at the estate, I would have liked to spend more time enjoying all the sights, not waiting in line. Otherwise, a very satisfying -- but rushed -- experience.
I am enjoying this trip so much. Our guide came on time and he was very informative and fun. The only thing that I wasn't expected is that I thought that we will be strolling around Alexandria, not only passing by. Mount Vernon is very beautiful and I enjoy the museum so much.
Great trip, great guide. Very worthwhile, Mt. Vernon and Old Alexandria were both a very good take.
Tour started at 11:00 AM and lasted until 4:00 PM. There was no time allocated for lunch! Several people complained about this. Otherwise, the tour was great!
Lovely place to visit and interesting to see the house and tomb of the Washingtons
Enjoyed everything we saw. Wish we had a little more time and possibly the opportunity to get an overview with a guide. In Alexandria, it would be good to have more time to see and walk in the City.
Our tour guide, Bobby, was very entertaining. We enjoyed Mt Vernon and seeing Old Town Alexandria. Bobby kept us entertained during the trip from D.C. To Mt. Vernon. He made sure we knew exactly what to do and see while at Mt Vernon
Great trip! My family totally enjoyed it. The tour guide, Joe, was great. I highly recommend Viator, they do a great job!
This tour is mainly a transportation means to Mount Vernon. We only stopped once and briefly before heading to Mt Vernon at Gadby's Tavern. We did not go inside, the tour guide briefly described the place and then we were on our way to Mt Vernon. In Mt Vernon, you are on your own. The tour guide dropped us off and the picked us up at a designated time. That's it. I am giving it 4 stars because the tour guide was really nice and also because it was worth seeing Mt Vernon as it was one of Washington DC trip highlights.
Wonderful! The driver/tour guide was upbeat and knowledgeable, making the trip lots of fun on the way to and from Mount Vernon. We were able to stop and take pictures in Alexandria, which was nice. Once we got to Mount Vernon, we were then given time to go off on our own, which worked out well since there is SO much you can do there. By the way, Mount Vernon is absolutely beautiful, and well worth the visit!
Didn't get to see much of Old Town Alexandria. Only one five minute stop. Tour guide was excellent however.
First of all, the vehicle was lux, clean, and very comfortable. There was a slight delay in arrival, but we were kept informed by phone so it wasn't a problem. Our driver, Joe, was polite, well informed, and presented information with a good dose of humor. I thoroughly enjoyed the trips to Mt Vernon and Alexandria, Va. Before taking the tour at Mt V, we were given good tips on how to best enjoy the estate. All in all, a good experience,
Mt Vernon was lovely. Had plenty of time to explore . Loved stopping in Alexandria before to see Christ Church. It felt a little rushed . Wished we could have stayed and explored a little more. Don't really need to take the tour. We just didn't have a car. Basically it was just like hirering a drive
It was snowing in March! By this time it stopped snowing and the frigid cold air turned the snow into ice. Ive never had to bundle up that much. The van picked us up promplty. It was a total of seven people and it was very private. The driver showed us Washington's church and bar/restaurant were imporrtant historical figures used mingle. Then we went to Mt. Vernon. Beautiful sight!!! We decided to walk around farm to the slave quarters where few tourists went because it was too cold. I couldn't feel my body but it was worth having sights all to ourselves.
The original state of Mt Vernon is remarkable I wasn't expecting to be able to see so many of the staff and slave quarters. Everyone in our group of 11yrs to 76yrs was engaged in the tour and we learned a lot at the Alexandria stop. We actually sat where George Washington and his family had - talk about history coming to life!
Loved this tour and found both Mount Vernon and Old Town Alexandria really interesting and glad we booked this. Only small feedback would be to allow a little more time in Old Town Alexandria but as mentioned really enjoyed this.
Mt Vernon and Old Town Alexandria Day Trip from Washington DC
We really enjoyed this tour - it was a small group and the guide was very knowledgable. It rained during our visit but it did not stop us from seeing all of structure, grounds and the graves of the Martha and George Washington.
The movie before you go into the groups was very informative - don't miss it - it is included in the ticket.
Try the food count for a bite to eat after your tour has pizza - sandwiches and salads - and sweets of course. It is typical - nothing special, but if you are hungry it will fit the bill.
My favorite part about the trip was visiting the church the Washingtons attended in Alexandria - we had a member of the church who was very knowledgable about the Washingtons and the history of the church. We also got to sit in the Washington pew.
Driver was excellent overall, especially in describing history of Old Town Alexandria which we passed through on the way to Mount Vernon. Mount Vernon Tour was good, just not enough time to walk through the rest of the estate after the scheduled tour of the mansion itself at 1 PM, which takes a good 30-45 min with the lines and taking even 15 min for lunch departure time to return to DC was 3 PM in the van.
it was a good tour but you have to go to a location to meet your guide. he was on his cellphone on the first of the trip.
Fantastic! Must not miss! Beautiful location! Pick up and drop off is very convenient as Mt. Vernon is about 45 minutes from D.C. city center probably longer if there's a lot of traffic
Loved this tour very interesting easy to get to meeting place and guide was very informative and fun loved the fact we were dropped back to our hotel after a great day.
My family and I had a wonderful time!
I really enjoyed my tour. Joe was extremely helpful. I wish the church had been open to tour that morning but it gave us more time to explore Mt Vernon
Only wish I'd had more time. So much to see at Mt. Vernon. Don't miss the education building!
Joe and Bobby gave me a great history lesson. I learned a lot from them. I wished we had time to stop in Alexandria and look at the sites.
Our tour guide, Tunda, was wonderful!
Very enjoyable trip. Tour guide was very helpful and courteous. The ride to Mt Vernon was comfortable. I would recommend this trip to someone that is interested in seeing Mt. Vernon without the hassle of driving yourself. The tour also had tickets ready for us to enter the mansion and we were able to get right in without delay.
This was my favorite tour. It was amazing.
I was alone during this trip on a weekday. The driver, tour guide was very nice, very informative about the sites and I was happy w/ this company. Good job!
Very knowledgeable and enthusiastic guide. Would book another tour with him.
The driver/guide was excellent. I and #39;d have like to have at least one more hour to stroll all the place.
Our tour guide, Tony, was great. He was funny and very knowledgeable! I enjoyed the information he shared and he presented it in a way that kept the passengers engaged. I loved stopping in Old Alexandria to see Gasby's Tavern and Christ Church. The town is so cute! It would be great if Tony structured the tour to have lunch in Old Alexandria instead of at Mt. Vernon. There are just so many options in Old Alexandria and it would give time to explore the city. Overall, we had a good time.
So much history, Fascinating!
Excellent driver and good place to visit to understand Washington .
WE ENJOYED IT AND HAVE NO COMPLAINTS.
The tour was great. Our guide was very funny. It was a great day and tour and I would book it again.
This is a wonderful tour. Appreciated the driver's information about Alexanderia, and the stop at Christ's Church in Alexandria where George Washington worshipped. We had 3 hours at Mt. Vernon, time to tour and take it all in.
Mount Vernon was a wonderful experience. We did not find any value in the Alexandria stop -- it only seemed to be an opportunity for the driver to use the rest room. We would have much preferred to have more time at Mount Vernon. While courteous, our driver really should have not used our time in the van to discuss his political views.
Joe I think that's his name told us a lot of very interesting information on the way out and Mount Vernon was just great. Paul showed up on time to give us a ride back.
Recommend this trip highly.
We had a great time. The trip was good and very informative. The bus driver, Big Joe, was great to ride with and kept us on our toes with facts and questions. I would recommend this trip!
There were only two couples on this tour so it was very personable with each other and the tour guide.
The tour was very informative. The grounds are awesome. Lady Washington was on site today and she is a very interesting person.
Had a great day, well worth the time. The history was very interesting as we're both the educational centre and museum. The tour guide was good fun and had very good knowledge on the history but also on golf.
It was great!
Our tour guide was great! Great experience !
It was a great tour, I would recommend it. Our tour guide wasn't feeling well and you could see it, but he still gave us a great tour and was very funny!
A very nice trip. Mt. Vernon is beautiful. It was a very hot day so we didn't explore as much as we thought we would.
Mt. Vernon is a wonderful place to visit. You can feel the history here. If you are a fan of George Washington, it's a must to see.
Great trip went very quickly could have spent more time exploring local areas,
Great personal service. Very comfortable transport. Good commentary
The tour guide was great, but could have used a microphone as the people in the rear seat had difficulty hearing. I was a little disappointed with the tour of the house. I expected more. The museum was great but we needed more time. We did not get to view all the movies. Overall a great day.
We enjoyed the tour very much. Docents are excellent bus drivers are friendly, safe and knowledgeable. My complaint is that, due to time constraints, you only drive through Alexandria. I would have loved to spend time there. Another time, on our own.
This was an amazing place to visit. You need an ENTIRE day to view everything from the house tour, ground tour, cruise along Potomac which I didn't experience and view the education center/mini museum. You might skip the Old Town Alexandria stops and add addition time to Mt Vernon.
Our tour guide Joe was knowledgable and friendly. This tour was worth the time and money.
My daughter and I had a fantastic time at Mt. Vernon our driver was very helpful and kind.
It was a wonderful tour, everything worked smoothly and I learned so much from my driver, Paul!
Our tour guide, Joe, was fantastic. He challenged my teen son with trivia questions on American history related to George Washington and produced a family contest while driving to Mt. Vernon. When a school field trip arrived ahead of us, Joe adjusted the tour appropriately. We loved this opportunity Joe afforded us. We would go on another tour with Joe in the Washington, DC area.
Great tour...I highly recommend. Our tour guide Paul was super. The three stops in Alexandria were very informative and the docent lead tour at the Mt. Vernon mansion was wonderful. I recommend you give yourself at least three hours to tour the mansion and grounds and to have a quick bite.
Mike and Lorraine; January 2015
This tour was amazing!
Great time visiting Mt Vernon! Bus was comfortable and driver very knowledgeable and friendly. Recommend this to anyone visiting DC!
Guide was great. He even offered to drop off at own hotel vs where he picked me up which was quite a walk. He explained things clearly and well. The small group of us all were from differnt parts of the world. It was great to experience it from other perspectives.
This tour was amazing!
A thoroughly enjoyable day.
There were only 3 on the tour so we had a car pick us up.
The driver was very nice - and pointed out some sights and stopped in Alexandria to show us a few buildings and a Tavern on the way to Mount Vernon.
It did become evident that the driver was not a guide, as he was not able to answer historic questions and when we reached mount vernon he went to the wrong window to get our tickets.
Mount Vernon was a wonderful experience from the film- to the house and assocaited buildings - to Washingtons tomb. Sadly we didn't have very long there ( about 2.5 hours) and could have done with another 1.5 hours. We didn't have time to get any lunch in either Alexandria or at Mount Vernon - only time to grab a cold drink and a snack ( a pretel for me). I would rather have started at 9.00 ( instead of 11.00) so as to have a full day and not be so rushed.
However, I really enjoyed it and would happliy recommend this tour to others,
Highly recommend and have plenty of time to see all there is to see.
I learned so much about Washington- My husband was chosen to read his prayer st the wreath laying- Mt Vernon was so impressive
Everything about the tour was great except that some provision should be made to visit Mt. Vernon's gristmill and distillery, which are not within walking distance of the main tourist center.
This tour was amazing!
Loved are guide and driver...the only thing was the house tour got started late and then we didn't have time to go through the museum part afterwards. But our Guide was awesome (can't remember he's name).
We enjoyed our trip to Mount Vernon. It was a bit of a shock to be the only people on the tour but the guide was very good, very knowledgeable and interested in the history that he told us about. It was a little confusing at the hotel for the pickup, we didn't know what to look for, but eventually found the guide. The mini bus needs to have some sort of clear advertising on to help people who do the tours. At the house everyone was helpful if you asked them questions, the displays and the buildings were fantastic, would recommend for everyone to see this.
VERY IMPRESSIVE! The house and grounds are well maintained and the tour is just too short to see everything but that's just becasue there is too much to see. Very highly recommended.
Fun day. Would loved to have spent some time in Alexandria.
Took my 12 year old grandson for 6 days in Washington DC over spring break. We saw almost everything we had planned and had a wonderful time. My favorite day was the trip to Mr. Vernon. Mt Vernon and our tour director was wonderful!
Loved Mt. Vernon once we were dropped off. However, we couldn't visit a lot of the grounds because of the snow. On the hand, there was not a great crowd which was nice. I felt it was questionable whether the van could make the trip. It didn't seem in the best condition. I also thought more time would be spent in Alexandria.
I had an amazing time on this tour! First stop was Fords Theatre to see to see where President Lincoln was shot which included a narrated guide, and then we had a couple of hours in Mt Vernon which was more than enough to see the plantation and grounds. My excellent guide and driver Leroy walked me through the grounds and gave me a huge amount of information and history in general about life at that time - all fascinating. This is a great time of year to visit Mt Vernon as it is not too crowded. There are plenty of restaurants and I picked up unusual gifts in their store. And then we drove through Old Town Alexandria and again Leroy pointed out all the places of interest. He offered to stop but due to jet lag we decided to continue. It was a brilliant day with a lovely informative and interesting guide.....i totally recommend it as an alternative to Washington city and museums.
Very nice tour although we did start Kate because the tour guide was not there. Great that we were returned to our final destination instead of the Hyatt.
Excellent tour! Our driver was very accommodating for those who wanted to snap pictures. Wish more time was allowed for browsing Alexandria. Great trip!
Personable and helpful tour guide. He gave our group the option (which we voted on) to cut an hour off of our Mount Vernon visit if we wanted to see the Air Force Memorial. That Memorial was great to visit and something that we would not have done if not for our tour guide,
Good tour - probably even better since it was one of the few things we were able to do during the government shut down. Guide did a great job.
Great driver, very friendly and informative. Mt Vernon well worth going to. It was raining when we went but would be great on a sunny day. We missed some things due the weather.
Tour guide was one of the best, me and my wife had a great day!
This was an excellent tour. Our guide, Leroy, described the buildings along the way, stopped in Alexandria for us to see Christ Church and the Lee House, and made an extra effort to get us through the mansion in the same group. He was very knowledgeable and helpful.
Our tour guide, Leroy, was pleasant and informative. He told us interesting facts about each place he took us. We saw everything promised and more.
A good tour. Old Town tour was not memorable other than drive down Kings Road. Mt. Vernon was awesome and guide provided good insight. It rained on our way back and guide actually returned us to our hotel rather than starting point, a very nice touch.
Bobby is kind, funny and informed. I lived in the beltway area for seven years and did not know Old Alexandria had once been part of the land selected for DC but was sold back to Virginia. I would pick VIAtor again.
We enjoyed this trip very much, but seriously regretted the fact that it didn't leave an hour earlier, Mount Vernon has so much to explore, but we only had time to go round the house and the tomb before we had to race back to the coach. I would also have liked more time in Alexandria. The driver/guide was very knowledgeable and the fact there were only a handful of us on the tour made it easier to follow the commentary, and contribute some questions.
Once we got to Mt Vernon the tour took a turn for the better...our tour guide/driver was questionable. He wasn't professional however once he dropped us off at Mt Vernon and we were on our own all was good. Mt Vernon is grand there's plenty of history to see and learn about. Oh also, the driver's van was raggedy we weren't sure if it would survive the 5 hour tour. I will give this tour 5 stars because Mt Vernon is worth seeing however the tour guide/driver is another story.
We enjoyed our trip through Old Town Alexandria. Our guide, Bobby, made it a very entertaining ride with lots of comical lines and also Tons of history. He clearly loves his job and it shows. The van was a bit cramped with 11 of us on it, but our driver talked the whole way to Mt. Vernon and the time was memorable. Mt. Vernon was beautiful, if you have time take the guided tour on Slave History (45 min.) with one of Mt. Vernon's guides. It was wonderful and literally brought you to tears by the end. You take a guided tour through the House only by the Mt. Vernon guides. Your Bus guide does not take you through Mt. Vernon at all, so you are pretty much are your own except for the house tour. The web site is a little misleading about this. All in all it was a worthwhile trip and money well spent. Our driver brought you back to wherever you wanted to go in DC on the way back. Since it ends by 4 pm we were dropped off at a museum instead of our hotel.
This was a surprise...we were not expecting to be the only two people in an SUV heading to Mt. Vernon. Our guide was informative, very polite and paid a great deal of attention to our personal needs. He clearly enjoys his job and had a good bit of information about the area. The "tour" of Old Town was adequate, with a quick stop at the church and a drive-by tour of a couple of other points of interest, but nothing spectacular. Once you are at Mt Vernon, the tour is conducted by the official MV tour guides and then time on your own. You are basically paying for the drive out there and back, plus your admission to Mt Vernon with your booking - We had taken a taxi to the departure place, but our guide was more than happy to return us directly to our hotel. All in all, we were quite satisfied.
This is the only trip that doesn't force you to have an 8:00 AM start time. We spent plenty of time in Mount Vernon to see everything we should have seen. Rob is one of the absolutely most knowledgeable DC tour guides anyone could find. He is also well-traveled which gives him a cutting edge above all others. He gave a lot of tidbits about the sites we past all throughout the bus ride which made the trip very pleasant and passed the time without even realizing it. He even provided bottled water if we needed it. Great trip! Great Guy! Great Guide!
This was a really neat tour to go on. It is a site that everyone will enjoy, and is really not to be missed.
